However, during colonization, this sacred practice was forcibly taken away from my ancestors, instilling fear on a bio-chemical level that was passed down through our DNA. I propose that apprehension and negative stigma surrounding Spirit communication from within indigenous communities stem from the traumatic experiences endured rather than the act of Spirit communication itself, and that negative stigma from outside of indigenous communities is a conscious or unconscious perpetuation of colonization. At one point in time, for indigenous communities, connecting with Spirit for guidance and direction was not only accepted but embraced as a fundamental part of life.
