How to Get Out of Survival Mode: 7 Signs Your Nervous System Is Stuck (and What to Do About It)7/26/2026
Have you ever stopped and wondered...
"Why does everything feel so hard?" Even when things are going well, your body still feels like it's waiting for the other shoe to drop. Maybe you can't relax. Maybe your mind never stops. Maybe you're always preparing for the next problem before you've even enjoyed the present moment. Maybe you're constantly taking care of everyone else while quietly wondering when it'll finally be your turn. Maybe receiving love, rest, money, support, or joy feels strangely uncomfortable. If any of that sounds familiar, I want you to hear this: You may be living in survival mode. The beautiful thing about survival mode is that it isn't your identity. It's a pattern. And patterns can change. As a Shaman, Certified Emotion Code Practitioner, and coherence coach, I've watched people transform their lives not because they became different people, but because they stopped living from survival and started living from coherence. If you're queer, BIPOC, or someone who deeply values creating safer, more affirming spaces, I especially want you to know you're welcome here. Many of my clients have spent years carrying not only personal experiences, but also the chronic stress that can come from navigating environments where they haven't always felt fully seen or safe. This is a space where your full humanity is welcome. Let's talk about what survival mode actually is and, more importantly, how to move beyond it. What Is Survival Mode?Survival mode is your nervous system's way of protecting you. It's incredibly intelligent. When your brain senses danger, it prepares your body to survive. Your heart rate changes. Your muscles tense. Your attention narrows. Your body becomes incredibly efficient at keeping you alive. The problem is... Many of us learned to stay there. Sometimes because of childhood experiences. Sometimes because of difficult relationships. Sometimes because of chronic stress. Sometimes because of experiences of discrimination, grief, burnout, or simply carrying too much for too long. Eventually, your nervous system stops asking, "Am I safe?" and starts assuming, "I should probably stay ready." Over time, surviving begins to feel normal. You stop noticing the tension because you've been carrying it for so long. What Does Survival Mode Feel Like? Most people don't wake up thinking, "I'm living in survival mode." Instead, they say things like: "I'm exhausted." "I'm overwhelmed." "I can't make decisions." "I keep repeating the same patterns." "I don't trust myself." "I'm always waiting for something to go wrong." Those are often signs that your nervous system has learned to stay vigilant instead of relaxed. 7 Signs You May Be Living in Survival Mode 1. Rest Feels Uncomfortable Have you ever finally had a day off... ...only to spend the entire day feeling guilty? You tell yourself you should be cleaning. Working. Answering emails. Being productive. Your body doesn't know how to simply be. That isn't laziness. That's survival mode. 2. Your Mind Is Always Solving Problems Even when nothing is wrong. Your brain immediately asks: "What am I forgetting?" "What if this doesn't work?" "What happens next?" Your nervous system believes staying alert keeps you safe. 3. You Keep Repeating the Same Relationship Patterns Different people. Same dynamics. People pleasing. Overgiving. Difficulty trusting. Fear of being too much. Fear of not being enough. When our nervous system doesn't feel safe, it often recreates familiar patterns because familiar feels predictable. 4. Receiving Feels Hard Compliments. Love. Support. Money. Opportunities. Sometimes they feel surprisingly uncomfortable. Many people are incredibly skilled at giving. Receiving is where they freeze. 5. You Feel Responsible for Everyone Else You notice everyone's emotions before your own. You try to keep the peace. You over-explain. You apologize for existing. You carry emotional weight that doesn't belong to you. Sound familiar? 6. Small Things Feel Bigger Than They Are An email. A text message. Someone's facial expression. One unexpected expense. Your reaction feels much bigger than the situation itself. That isn't because you're weak. It's because your nervous system has very little extra capacity. 7. Peace Feels Strange This one surprises people. Sometimes chaos feels more familiar than calm. When life is peaceful... You start looking for what's wrong. You brace for bad news. You create problems that don't exist yet. Because your nervous system learned that calm doesn't last. What Is Coherence? This is where everything changed for me. You've probably heard me talk about coherence before. To me, coherence is when your thoughts, emotions, nervous system, and actions begin working together instead of pulling you in different directions. It's not about pretending everything is okay. It's not about toxic positivity. It's not about never feeling fear. It's about increasing your capacity to stay connected to yourself, even when life is difficult. Instead of reacting automatically... You respond intentionally. Instead of abandoning yourself... You stay with yourself. Instead of surviving... You begin living. What Happens When You Create More Coherence? People often imagine transformation looks dramatic. Sometimes it does. More often... It looks surprisingly ordinary. You answer the difficult email without spiraling. You have the hard conversation you've been avoiding. You stop apologizing for taking up space. You finally say yes to the thing you've secretly wanted. You stop replaying every interaction. You sleep better. You laugh more. You trust yourself. You notice beauty again. Your relationships deepen. You become available for joy. Those small moments create extraordinary lives. How I Help People Move Beyond Survival Mode There isn't one magic tool. Healing is about increasing your capacity over time. In my work, I use several approaches depending on what's most supportive. Sometimes that's nervous system regulation. Sometimes it's coaching. Sometimes it's the Emotion Code to help release trapped emotions that may be contributing to old patterns. Sometimes it's simply helping someone reconnect with themselves. The goal is always the same. More freedom. More choice. More coherence. Stop. Drop. Create. Coherence™ This philosophy became the foundation of my work because I realized most people don't need more information. They need more capacity. Here's the practice. Stop. Pause. Notice what's happening inside you. Without judgment. Without trying to fix it. Simply notice. Drop. Drop what you’re doing. Come back into your body. Feel your feet. Take a breath. Orient to your surroundings. Allow your nervous system to remember that this moment is different from the past. Create Coherence. Practice an evidence based exercise to get out of the fight/flight sequence. You Don't Have to Figure This Out Alone Learning to move beyond survival mode is about interrupting old patterns, old stories, and nourishing your nervous system. That process takes practice. That's exactly why I created my Stop. Drop. Create. Coherence™ Practice Series. Inside, I'll guide you through simple, practical exercises you can use to increase your capacity, regulate your nervous system, and begin creating a more coherent way of living. Practices you can return to again and again. Frequently Asked Questions Can you ever fully get out of survival mode? Many people find they can significantly increase their capacity to feel safe, connected, and present. Growth isn't about never feeling stressed again. It's about spending less time stuck there and knowing how to return to yourself more quickly. Is survival mode the same as fight, flight, freeze, or fawn? Survival mode often includes these protective responses. They are natural ways your nervous system responds to perceived danger. Can trapped emotions contribute to survival mode? Many people believe unresolved emotional experiences can influence how safe or activated they feel. In my practice, the Emotion Code is one of the tools I use to help release trapped emotions that may no longer be serving someone, creating more space for coherence. Is this work LGBTQ+ affirming? Absolutely. Many of the people I work with are queer, BIPOC, and allies. My practice is grounded in creating a space where your identity is honored and your humanity is welcomed. Your Life Doesn't Have to Be About Surviving What if the next chapter of your life wasn't about becoming tougher? What if it was about becoming more connected? More present. More open. More yourself. You deserve more than surviving. You deserve a coherent life. Comments are closed.
